Which type?

Hello everybody my names Toby and I'm 15 I have been rather interested in the world of finance from a young age, I've been gaining knowledge towards m&a, Ecm and etc (this is all good but it never really talks about personal work life) but am absolutely clueless for which one to pursue. If anyone could give an insight to the way of life for these types of ibd?

Even though you are 15 and you´re very young to even think about a career in finance, let me satisfy your curiosity:

As far as I know there are several different parts within an Investment Bank:

  • Investment Banking: as you join you will spend your time doing 2 main things, valuation and financial modelling. You´ll work on cases such as M&As, LBOs or restructuring projects. *Also referred to as IBD, corporate finance or Advisory

  • Sales & Trading: well, here you just take and trade clients´orders and provide trading ideas.

  • Sell-side research: you will spend your time doing fundamental research and analysis of the companies. These guys issue buy/sell recommendations for internal and external clients.

  • Asset Management: also called Investment Management. You are the one in charge of managing risks and portfolios. You can also produce buy-side research and this is pretty much the same than what an equity researcher does.

  • Private Banking and Wealth Management: you will meet (especially) individual clients and you will be the one who manages their money.

Hope this clarify your ideas, so now you can see why it is wrong to say that equity research is a type of IBD.

Cheers mate
