why do banks pay 90k base for Analyst 1s?

i have a couple friends at some boutiques that are only paying them 90k base for an ib analyst position in NYC. How does that make sense and how can banks justify paying that low and working their analysts so hard. It doesn’t make sense to me. are bonuses better at places like these? currently a college sophomore recruiting but does anyone have advice on how to live in NYC with that money?

Because these are much smaller firms that don't compete with the BBs for candidates. Anyone who can get a BB/EB/MM/any type of reputable bank will take it over a small boutique. They still have literally thousands of applicants so there's no reason to raise pay. Bonus and overall comp will generally be lower.

You can definitely live in NYC on $90k plus bonus... you won't live in the Plaza but most analysts have roommates anyway
