Will this internship be useful?
I got a marketing manager intern position at a small tech start-up that's experiencing a ton of growth right now. I work directly with the founders to bring new users to the site, and I also manage groups of younger interns. It'll take up at most 1 hour per day, as I'm actually doing a lot of work in this position. Is this worth doing? Right now, as a freshman at a HYP, I have no work experience whatsoever, so I thought it might be good to get something on my resume. Also, the founder used to work in banking, and is willing to share his network and give recs.
I'm confused, is this an internship during the school year or for this summer? As a freshman any kind of work experience is useful and tapping on the network of your boss is definitely helpful but I wouldn't overestimate its usefulness. Lots of other factors at play here but if you don't have too many other options I'd say go with it. You have a ton of time in the Spring to apply for internships so if you think you can get something better then I say go for it.
I think some of it is going to depend on what you make of it. That environment doesn't seem like you have a clearly defined role which can be good or bad depending on you.
Anything relating to project management, financial analysis, preparation of marketing/sales materials, or fund raising is directly relevant.
The internship demonstrates work ethic and your desire to become a professional. In that sense, it is well worth your time. My suggestion would be to do your best at the internship and to start networking with alumni. Try to get at least a boutique IB internship for sophomore year. That will set you up well for junior year SA.
Sorry to clarify this internship is over the course of the year and takes up around 45 minutes a day. So I'll have a different summer internship.
