Women going into IB?
I recently accepted a position as an Analyst at a middle-market bank in SF and will start beginning of January. Coming in as one of the few junior females on the team, I wanted to hear from other women on this page about their experiences working in a male-dominated environment. I’m also interested in hearing from some of the males, and how they feel interacting with female colleagues?
A little bit of background… I interned as an analyst this previous summer in NY and thoroughly enjoyed my experience. Other than one MD, I was the only girl in the entire IB division. The culture was extremely fratty, but welcoming at the same time. I always felt included and was regularly invited to group drinks after work or fun personal events over the weekend. The only major difference noticed was that the senior people tended to be easier on me than they were on the other analysts. It seemed like they had lower expectations for me, which I always strove to surpass. Even though I made a couple mistakes (albeit not major ones), I was never harshly reprimanded as I have seen happen with some of the other analysts. I know I produced good work and was well-liked, but I can’t help but wonder if my gender may have contributed to the way others interacted with me. I’m not complaining in anyway, I just want to understand if this a regular trend across IB or more of a unique experience on that particular team.
Thanks!!
