Work hours in Investment Banking

I recently received a position as analyst at one of the large investment banks in Canada. I would be working in their structured finance groups, some places call it securitization, derivatives or option groups. I was wondering if anyone know the work hours for this? They told me they generally get to the office at 7 in the morning and leave around 5 - 5:30. Is this true? How come the hours are so much shorter than almost all the sources for investment banking I've seen.

From what I've heard, Canada is a bit better for hours - I know a couple of people working 9-7 (same #hours), 5 days/week.

Having said that, they did seem to agree that that was the average - there were of course outliers.

hujjaDepends on which Canadian bank you work at. I know a guy at a Big 5 who works 18 hrs/day, 6 days a week.

I bet he hates life.

There are many bankers who work 100 hours a week...

Yeah, your role is definitely more market-focused than traditional IBD. You'll probably be working on the trading floor, and your hours will be similar to S&T.

But as someone already mentioned, hours in Canada are generally better than in the US. Even analysts at BB offices in Toronto work less on average. However, some groups get absolutely hammered all the time (RBC M&A, BMO Metals & Mining etc)
