Working full time &full time student, need future career advice (How cooked am I?)

Hello,

Currently I am attending a community college for business administration, in the fall I will transfer to SUNY University of Buffalo to begin my junior year, concentrating in finance . In addition to going to college, I also work 40 hours a week but it is unrelated to my studies. The benefit of working there is they pay for my tuition. Without the job I could not go to college. My only free time is the weekends. These circumstances will remain until I graduate UB.

Due to the fact that all of my time is used for work and school I am limited on what I am able to do. I cant do any internships unless it is after I graduate. I don't know any one who has a job in the area of my major. I don't have time to join clubs. This basically means I am unable to network unless it is literally during classes which is unlikely to succeed.

As for potential future jobs I don't care what it is as long as I make good money.

Basically I am looking for advice of what I should do as I am trying to make the best of my situation

Thank You

mba from a top 20 school (do not go to a cash grab or part time program) is probably your best bet to break into the high paying corporate world. You'll need to work a real job for 3-4 years before that though. Just try to get something in corporate finance, commercial banking, audit, etc. you'll need to do a bunch of BS to juice up your application like community service and get a top GMAT score though. Save money before going to fund yourself for 2 years and take out loans to pay for the tuition.

Can you elaborate on “without my job I could not go to college”? Why are student loans out of the question for a public school bachelor’s? If this is a voluntary thing, ruling out internships to come out debt free is probably a net negative, especially when you’re coming from a school that isn’t super reputable. This forum is a great indicator of how saturated the market is with finance grads from average schools that haven’t found employment related to finance since graduation because they didn’t have internships. Sorry to be blunt.

Well I know UB isn’t the best, but let’s say I take out student loans and go into debt. Their is nothing that says I get a internship offer. Even with a completed internship what’s to say I am able to get a job that I couldn’t of got without one. How much more competitive does having a internship coming from a non reputable school even make me. Is there a way I can do a internship after graduation? Or perhaps extend my classes leaving one class left to take and pay for it my self and try to get an internship so technically i’m still enrolled.

What are your goals, i.e. why are you getting a degree in the first place? Where do you want to start/end your career?

Internships will make you a lot more competitive regardless of your answers, but the importance will vary. It’s a lot easier to network your way into an internship (then leverage the experience into full time jobs later) than it is to network your way into a post-grad job with 0 real world experience.

I also think your mindset isn’t very good. It sounds like you’re just going to college to get a degree without high hopes that it’ll actually land you a better career.

I’m not trying to come off as pessimistic if that’s what it’s seem but i’m trying to be realistic. I appreciate your responses.

I’m going to school so I can get better job opportunities and to go as high as I can go. Better job meaning being paid well. I chose a finance degree because it seems to be pretty versatile, meaning you can get a middle class 9-5 office job or if you play or cards right make good money.

Obviously I’d like to do every reasonable thing to get and start out where everyone in this forum hopes to be. Obviously I don’t think i’m going to be able to get to corps where they only recruit from ivy leagues. If some how I can, god bless. With that being said perhaps maybe a corp more local as I believe they are more accepting of UB graduates bc it carry’s more clout here.

I don’t want to get student loans because if enviably I end up at 9-5 middle class job I don’t want to be getting bent over due to debt I didn’t have to have. Because I would rather save money and persue typical entrepreneur ventures on the side, and at least be able to get a house.

Another strategy i’ve thought of was getting experience for a year a two at a lower end place and trying to use that experience to get to a higher end place. I’m not sure how that actually plays out in reality.

I’m am asking for advice on this forum as I don’t know any one that I can talk to that knows anything about this type of stuff. When I get to UB which is Harvard compared to my cc, I will have more resources and people I can talk to.
