Would CMBS Originations/Capital Markets/structured finance at BB be considered Investment Banking?

Do people in CMBS originations/structured finance/capital markets at BB call themselves investment bankers? Is it considered less prestigious than the standard investment banking divisions?

Interesting. I know CMBS people at top BB that refer to themselves as investment bankers and list that as their title on linkedin.

Idk what the above poster is smoking. But yes structured finance originations is very much investment banking. That’s like saying a restructuring banker isn’t an investment banker because they’re part of a product group. They’re still IBers. Hours are similar, pay is similar, and the work is more technical than just throwing powerpoints together. Some firms have them in S&T, others have them under CIB. Work weeks vary between 65-80+, and pay is above S&T analysts/associates but on-par with coverage.

Would say no, but I also don't consider ECM/DCM investment banking either - to me, that's all capital markets (S&T) in addition to stuff like securitization. Classic IB would be RX/M&A/industry groups and also Lev Fin.

At the end of the day though it's all about selling yourself and putting your best foot forward so you shouldn't care about other people's opinions and market yourself the best way possible
