"X" on transcript during IB SA recruiting?
Hi everyone, I’m a rising sophomore at a U.S. target school and had to defer the final for an economics course last semester due to a serious illness. The make‑up final is scheduled for December with the Fall 2025 semester’s class.
Until then, my unofficial transcript will show an X for that course. At my school, X is a placeholder for a deferred final due to illness — it doesn’t affect my GPA (currently a 4.0) and will be replaced with a letter grade once I complete the exam. I expect to end up with around an A‑ in the class, so I’ll be fine after December.
For context, I’ll be going through 2027 IB SA recruiting for BBs/EBs this fall/winter/spring. Since many firms ask for an unofficial transcript with online applications, I’m wondering:
- How big of a red flag is having an X in one course during recruiting (until December, I'll be fine after that) if my GPA is otherwise perfect?
- Is it worth explaining in the “Additional Information” section of applications, or should I just wait until someone asks? What can I do if this is seen as a red flag?
- Has anyone had experience with OCR/HR reacting to something like this?
Would appreciate any advice from people who’ve dealt with transcript quirks like this during early recruiting.
Having an "X" on your transcript due to a deferred final for illness is unlikely to be a significant red flag during IB SA recruiting, especially since your GPA is a perfect 4.0 and the placeholder will be replaced with a strong grade (A-) by December. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can approach this situation:
Minimal Impact on Recruiting: Most firms understand that transcripts can have quirks, especially for legitimate reasons like illness. The "X" is a placeholder and does not affect your GPA, which is a key metric recruiters focus on. As long as your overall academic performance is strong, this should not be a major issue.
Addressing It in Applications: It’s generally a good idea to preemptively explain the "X" in the "Additional Information" section of your applications. Keep the explanation concise and professional. For example:
Proactive Communication: If the topic comes up during interviews or discussions with HR, be transparent and confident in your explanation. Emphasize that the situation was due to circumstances beyond your control and that it will not impact your academic performance or readiness for the role.
Leverage Networking: If you’re concerned about how this might be perceived, networking with alumni or professionals at your target firms can help. They can provide insights into how their firm might view this and potentially advocate for you during the process.
Focus on Strengths: Highlight your perfect GPA, target school background, and any relevant experiences or skills that make you a strong candidate. This will help shift the focus away from minor transcript details.
Recruiters are generally more concerned with overall academic performance, relevant experience, and fit for the role. As long as you handle the situation professionally and provide a clear explanation, the "X" should not be a significant obstacle.

You should differ graduation by three years just in case
I'll push it to four just to be sure, appreciate the advice Paul Owen
none of the firms I got an offer at (BBs) wanted transcripts. I am working at a top BB/EB and never sent them my transcript. You are fine. No one cares. Just be good on every other part of the process.
Thanks
