3rd Yr Medical Student Upcoming Year Off Healthcare Shop Opportunities
As title states, have an upcoming year “off” for school I am planning to use to focus on field-specific research (very common in more competitive fields of medicine for context). I imagine that this will not take up ALL of my time and many med students treat these “research years” as chill years to get back to normal life. I’m extremely interested in pursuing finance and healthcare / life sciences investing as a physician / post med school and have some healthcare-economics papers published as well as having done a lot of independent reading about the field (read: all of my friends and long-term gf are in private equity mega funds in nyc). What opportunities can I look for / hope for to gain some experience in these fields this upcoming year as an intern maybe or part time / shadowing etc. Should I cold email / LinkedIn people with MD degrees at firms? I know some MBB like McKinsey have advanced degree analyst/associate positions. If it’s relevant, Ivy undergrad, T5 med school. Thanks so much for the advice in advance!
MD here myself. Why would you cold DM ppl on LinkedIn when you have what seems to be a decent network already you could tap into? Get your friends to set up coffee chats for you with the health care guys at their shops. You need to start by figuring out whether you want to do privates or publics or crossovers and what stage. An Avoro or Commodore is different than a Catalio or Perceptive which is different than an ADAR1 or Braidwell
Thanks for the response. Let’s say I do a coffee chat with a healthcare PE principal/VP/MD etc at one of my friends shops.. what kind of opportunity should I be looking for / what should I be asking for?
Just ask your friends how to network lol this isn’t like filling out AMCAS there’s no recipe for how to go about doing this. If your friends all work at MF PE it’s safe to say you won’t be interning at their shops really any time soon unless you get immensely lucky. Getting an internship that isn’t posted anywhere publicly is going to be about referrals to their friends and colleagues. Cold networking on LinkedIn is good too, my point was that you aren’t thinking about your existing network hard enough.
Bumping for the below comment, would love to know how you transitioned from medicine to hedge fund as well. Thank you!
Also, if you don’t mind sharing how did u go from medicine to HF? At what point in medical track did you make the switch, are you happy?
