It really depends on the work, the company, and where you see the job taking you. The role being more "senior" doesn't necessarily mean it's a better opportunity. Doing a FDP at a top tech company is a really solid role that would springboard you within the company, and MBA schools absolutely love that type of experience. I would say that probably looks better on an MBA app and sets you up for leadership positions better than business operations.

That said, if you truly believe being a business manager within operations is a better job, both right now and in the future, and would lead to better growth and skills, then that you will have to weigh that against the opportunity cost of moving, living on the east coast, leaving your partner, ect.

As a personal two cents -- moving across the country sucks, and unless it's a much, much better opportunity and/or you're unhappy where you are, I'd think twice about it.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to respond- I really appreciate your advice! I don't know anyone really in the finance industry so this is really great to hear.

I was looking at your posts (sorry for stalking!) and noticed you had done a similar corporate finance role. As someone who has more experience than me in this role, what would you say are the main career paths after following the FDP -> MBA route?

Thanks again!

It really depends on what you want to do. Doing an FDP, especially at a renowned tech firm, will give you a strong understanding of how a business works. That sort of strategy and leadership experience can often take you down the path to executive positions. You could do product strategy, corporate strategy, operations, consulting, ect. A nice thing about a rotational program is that you get to experience various roles and see what type of work you enjoy, so it's less likely you'll be pigeonholed into something you don't like.

Doing a FDP is a solid precursor to getting into a good MBA program, and from there it's really up to you. An MBA can often act as a "career reset" in that you could come into it and essentially change career paths, like going from corp fin to consulting, banking to corporate strategy, ect. That said, if you know for certain you want to be in a specific field, like capital markets or banking, then it's worth considering starting there if you have the opportunity. You can certainly move after/during a FDP if you network and are a high achiever, otherwise you may need to get an MBA to move there.
