Advice on Rotation Selection (F50 MBA LDP) and CPA Feasability

Hi All,

Graduating from a Top 20 MBA program this spring but started my post-MBA role (MBA LDP) early since I have been going to school part-time. Undergrad in Business with a finance/accounting background (Internal Audit, Controller, FP&A) with 6 years of experience. I have entered a rotational program where I may be able to get rotations in the following if I network properly (have been researching potential people to network with):

  • Corporate Development
  • Venture Capital
  • Investor Relations
  • Treasury
  • Investment Management
  • Supply Chain Finance (different from my past FP&A experience and would provide value)
  • Procurement
  • Competitive Intelligence
  • Enterprise Strategy

Most are individual contributor roles but a handful are people-manager roles. My current stance is to value areas I am interested in over whether I would manage people or not (none of the roles above are people-manager roles). If I am doing my best work then the right people will notice and the people-managing will follow.

Assuming I can only choose 3 (possibly 4), what combination of these areas will provide the best comprehensive experience that could lead to a CFO role in the future? There are other roles but most are either similar to my past experience (Internal Audit, Controller, FP&A) or roles that are too industry-specific. I am looking for experiences that apply across industries so I don't pigeonhole myself.

Additionally, I have read more recently that it is becoming more common for CFOs to not have a CPA although the CEO of my employer does have a CPA and ChFC (not sure how much weight a ChFC has to be honest). It still seems like most CFOs have a CPA and it seems like a CMA isn't valued nearly as much. I have the 150 credit hours that are needed for the CPA license in my state but do not have the 1 year of experience under a current CPA. Given my employer will most likely help me with the cost I feel like I should at least give it shot even though I am a bad test taker due to test anxiety (have started meditating daily to help improve this).

Guidance and/or feedback is greatly appreciated. How you all are doing well and staying safe!
