Advice on this summer

Hey guys, long time lurker first time poster.

I wanted to get some advice from WSO for what I should do with my junior year summer.

I did not manage to land any good internships for this summer. I am a rising senior attending an Ivy, @ a 3.0 as of this most recent semester. Currently I am in the process of going to a second round "interview" with Northwestern Mutual as a Financial Rep intern. I've read the various posts on WSO about this internship and realize its not the best and most likely will not help me in full time recruitment come this fall but I don't have any other relevant experience.

For full time recruitment in finance come this fall, would going through with this internship be advisable? Or is my summer better spent studying for the CFA or GMAT and trying to network?

Any thoughts/advice are much appreciated.

That all depends what you do at NW Mutual. If you sell and kill it this summer, you'll have some real takeaway and talking points on your resume, even if they aren't I-Banking. If you're just gonna slack off because it's not a super relevant internship, then you should not take it. You should also study/network after work, as I can't imagine it's a mentally draining day-to-day operation.

what's your end goal? PWM? IB? ER? Consulting? I'd network like hell, you go to an Ivy so you've got to have alumni in the area who are in your target industry, and offer to be a free intern at a PWM firm, their programs are less structured, especially boutiques. NW Mutual is a terrible brand in my part of the country.

I suppose something is better than nothing, so I wouldn't stop the interviews, but I'd spend day & night trying to get a better gig. lean on your school's resources, again you're at an Ivy, you should have options.

PS: awesome username
