Advice to IB
I'm a first year student, enrolled to a non-target university in the southern Italy. I want to know some advice to get a IB job, wishing to work in UK or US. If anyone could also give me some networking or other possibilities to catch someone who work in these zone, i would be thankful. Now i'm attending a course to obtain a B2 Cambridge Certification, and would like to know if i have to attend other course or certification to increase my position to land a job after graduation.
Online courses don't help. For London, networking has limited importance too.
So what do i need to do?
have a good CV and apply to internships, pass online tests and pray you get an interview.
Hey man. Networking is very important in the US but not that much in the UK. The recruitment process is very standardised in the UK (online application, online tests, video/telephone interview, assesment centre...)
I can only speak for the UK but if you do apply for a summer internship, all (or most) banks will sponsor your visa. No problem for EU nationals.
B2 in English is great, but if you can get a C1 afterwards that'd be even better!
Also try to contact people on LinkedIn working on IB so you can ask them about their experiences, that way you can have a better idea of why you wanna do IB and explain it when you do your interviews (you can say during your interview with 'Bank XYZ' that you talked to some of their analysts/associates/VPs and was surprised by what you learnt). Also make sure to learn by heart and understand the technical questions!
For the technical questions, are the M&I 400 questions a good guide for SA roles ? Do u need to need to know all of em or only the basic ones or the more accounting focussed questions or should you just prepare all of them ?
That's a great starting point! I've interviewed with BB banks for intern roles (IB/M&A) and a lot of the questions I got asked were exactly the same (or at least very similar). However, it all really depends on your background. If you studied economics/finance/accounting at university or have relevant work experience, interviewers will expect a more in-depth understanding of these topics from you, whereas if you come from non-traditional paths, they may be more lenient on you. As someone recommended below, try to understand the concepts behind the questions from M&I 400 questions in case you get asked follow-up questions. Best of luck!
Try to learn accounting instead of memorising the answers to what you may think are predetermined interview questions. You can memorise the answer to “tell me how the 3 statements link” but then when someone asks you to tell them industries where you’d expect negative NWC your draw will drop lol. It’s about understanding, once you understand these things you’re much less likely to constantly have to revise over and over again.
