Intern in IB - Gen:

Say 300k+ under 30?

Pretty much only options I can think of are 1) tech 2) certain sales jobs if you’re killing it and 3) getting lucky with a high paying FO family office job.

As others have said the answer depends on your view of what good WLB is and how much is "big" money. In general, the below tend to have better WLB and good comp:

Sellside

  1. Private Banking (different than wealth management)
  2. Capital Markets (PubFin, ABS, Project Finance, etc. teams are likely better than Lev Fin for WLB)
  3. Equity Research (earnings season is still tough)
  4. Sales roles in S&T (or really most sales roles (i.e. Tech Sales) if you're good)
  5. While I wouldn't say WLB is good, Sponsors teams tend to have the best hours out of coverage group

Buyside

  1. FoFs / Endowments / Family Offices / Secondaries / SWFs (lumping these together, but in general non-direct investing has better hours)
  2. Asset Management
  3. Private Credit

Corporate

  1. Corp Dev / Corp Strat (generally worse comp than the above, but can still make $500k+ as you age if you're in a good seat)

The worst jobs for WLB are IB (in general), Buyout PE, and Infra PE

reasons for infra PE specifically having bad WLB? also curious why you split out "buyout" PE — this is just PE, no?

Given the risk profile of Infra assets the modeling is a lot more granular and important to the process vs LBO PE (or regular PE as most think of it), so this can lead to higher hours in general (i.e. on par with buyout PE).

I said "Buyout" PE because there are different strategies in PE and I was being specific. Yes, when people say PE they generally think LBOs, but there is also Infra, REPE, Growth Equity, etc.
