Attaching Resume in Cold Email

Hi, currently trying to recruit for IB and AM. Should I attach my resume to my cold email? Should I do it in the thank you/follow up email? I have heard several mixed things online and from others about attaching resumes. I'd appreciate any advice. Thx.

Hey man, there is definitely conflicting stuff on this out there. When I went thru recruitment I initially did not attach my resume because I heard it was too “forward”. However, I found out very quickly that these people do want to see it and most of the time when I wouldn’t attach it they would ask for me to send over before the call. Would recommend attaching it 100% of the time.

Yeah, you’re right. I heard that sending a resume can make networking feel transactional because it may come across as if you’re only reaching out for them to forward your resume to HR. As a result, some people who did send their resumes only received responses like, “I passed your resume along to HR” or something similar to skip the talk.

From my personal experience, I would attach it. When students reach out to me, I prefer having a resume so I can quickly see if their background/professionalism is relevant enough for me to entertain a coffee chat. If it's not attached, it's kind of a shot in the dark so I hesitate and end up forgetting to respond.

Got it. I’m from a semi target school with a 3.6. I also have a great alumni network from high school. I’m awaiting to finalize a summer 2025 internship, but until then I can’t put it in my resume of course. That is why I’m hesitant to attaching it. What do you think?

You should put your upcoming internship, just note that you're an "Incoming Intern" in the position title. You will be more respected/likely to get coffee chats if you show you have an offer somewhere

The thing is I haven't finalized this internship. It would be almost a month a couple weeks until I would be able to confirm this internship. However, at the same time I can't delay applying for internships.

was wondering if your systems will block emails with attachments though - in a networking guide written by the upperclassmen at my school, they say cold outreach without a connection should never include a resume because it might get blocked.
