Bad undergrad grades
I am currently in deals advisory at a big four and have top bucket performance ratings consistently. I was also top of my class in post grad finance but had poor undergrad grades. There are a number of investment banks who have contacted me for potential jobs due to my track record where I currently work. I am reluctant to proceed with these offers due to my poor undergrad. Looking for advice on what to do about this as I’m ultimately aiming to get an investment banking role in the long run and believe I have all the technical abilities but I’m worried I won’t get the job once they see my undergrad.
Assuming you are several years out of undergrad, I am generally inclined to believe that grades do not matter nearly as much as performance/job history. However, depends on the school, how bad the grades were, and the bank. Some shops might care, some won't, don't let it stop you from recruiting if IB is what you want to do.
Thanks for your thoughts, really helpful. Ultimately I think I need to let them know upfront to ensure I’m not wasting peoples time if it is going to be an issue for them. That way they can make the call on what they think is more important.
How bad was your GPA? I would not bring it up out of nowhere if they don't ask. I would be more skeptical of a candidate if they brought it up to me out of the blue then just answering if/when I ask.
