Breaking into London IB from Australian Target

Hi everyone,

I'm seeking advice on the feasibility of landing an IB Summer Analyst role in London from a top Australian University (University of Sydney/UNSW/University of Melbourne).

For context, I am a British citizen and have lived abroad most of my life. I have IB internship experience at a prestigious boutique in Asia and am aiming to work in London post-graduation. I'm also doing an exchange at Bocconi next year and plan to utilise the summer to get an internship in London and hopefully extend into a return.

My main questions are: Am I at a significant disadvantage compared to candidates from UK-based universities? Any general advice or tips?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry thats what I meant by rule of thumb.

The BBs have a defined policy where they will only facilitate an internal move after a defined time period (typically ~2yrs - hence why it's so common at the early Assoc level).

To go earlier I'd imagine you would just apply to an open role at a bank and interview your way through.

Somebody can keep me honest but I think these are a better path than applying to an overseas internship program - from experience the reality of it is that international applications for internship just adds to the difficulty of what is already an extremely competitive process.

You'd have to apply like all the UK students asca British citizen.

Versus UK targets you'll probably be at a disadvantage.

Easier to get a job in Sydney office and then lateral / secondment.

Have you looked into how all the Au exam dates / Bocconi (UK) exam dates / Lon internship interview dates / Lon internship start end dates, line up? GL nonetheless

I know of one case where someone secured an internship and then grad position a top IB gig in London from an Australian uni. Not common, but apparently possible.

As others have said, much more common to join an IB office in Aus and then transfer to London office after a couple years. This route has its own challenges though (can be competitive to get transfers to London / NYC)
