Can I start early if I graduate a semester early?
Hey everyone,
I'm trying to set out a plan for graduation and getting a job beyond that. I'm an international student, so if I want to get a job in the US I'd have to receive an H1B visa. The only problem is that these are lottery based so it's unlikely I'll get one on my first year.
I currently have the option of graduating a semester early, in early December. This was originally due to cost - paying for one less semester of tuition would be ideal. However, I found out that even if I graduate a semester early, my student (F1) visa will last until May. This means if I can get a job offer before April, then I can ask the prospective employer to file the H1B in April. If I'm unsuccessful, then I could use up my 1 year of OPT and try again the next year.
I've got two questions: first, if whether my logic and reasoning above is valid and correct, and secondly the question in the title: will I be able to try and get a job offer before April?
Not sure what your question is, are you recruiting for an internship or full time job now?
Generally starting early is totally fine at BBs/EBs. If you're coming out of an SA summer it's common. Boutiques are case by case, you'd need to recruit earlier and tell them of course
My question was regarding full time employment. I'm relatively new to this entire process, sorry.
As a follow up question: when students graduate at the normal time, around about when do they begin the job seeking process (sending in resumes etc) and when do they receive a full time offer?
For IB, full time recruiting is in the first week of August before your senior year, but most (85%+) come in through summer analyst programs. You'd typically start networking a few months before.
Smaller firms may recruit on, but most are in the fall semester.
Amazing, thank you so much 3
Isn't it actually the opposite - by graduating on-time, you get to apply twice (if your employer is comfortable with the specifics). If you graduate early, your OPT will run out before you get to apply a second time.
By graduating in December, you will be required by USCIS to start working sometime in February at the latest. That is when your OPT starts, which means your 1-year OPT won't make it to the following H-1B application window (March 1).
By graduating on-time in May/June, you can use the mechanism where if you demonstrate that you are on-track to complete your degree, you will be eligible to submit an H-1B petition. Since your OPT start date is in July, you will be eligible to apply again the following April.
