Can You Force Mentorship or Is it Only Possible Naturally?
For years now, I've read articles about the importance of having a mentor in business publications and of course WSO posts. Inevitably, the next question is "how do I find a mentor?" which I've always found very strange.
Personally, I've had some great mentors in my career. However, I never tried to get a mentor. I've always been interested in my field. So, I would ask a lot of questions to people who knew better than me and had more experience. In addition, I would ask people about their own lives and careers out of genuine interest and because I liked them as people who were enjoyable to talk with. Lots of these people became my mentors without me even realizing it.
So, wanted to open this up for discussion. Is it even possible to truly "find" a mentor or is it something that has to happen naturally? From my experience, it seems like the latter. In my opinion, it's a bit serendipitious. Anything else almost seems like networking but not really mentorship. And yes, you can get great career advice from your network but often hard to identify someone as a mentor really looking out for you in the career world. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.
