CFA while Interviewing?
I am signed up and have been studying my ass off for Level 2 in June but am also going to be interviewing in the coming weeks. Ideally the job would start June 3rd but who knows what I will get into.
Any ideas on how to approach this topic in interviews? Specifically IB who will already be skeptical that I'm adding any value with the test?
I'm worried about being dinged because I'm tied to this June 1 test center date possibly in another city. My plan was to simply say, "yes I am signed up for the test but should I become employed and in a different location than my test center, I would place focus onto my place of employment and CFA would be only secondary to succeeding in my new environment." Something like this...
Help?
Can you not switch your test center in the event that you move? I'm not familiar with CFA testing process' but I don't see how it would be an issue.
I can move the test center until April 12 but after that I'm SOL.
I'm slightly confused on the question. Are you worried because you would have to travel to take the exam and miss work? can't imagine your employeer being too upset if you have to miss a day or two of work to go sit for a CFA exam. Just let them know during your interview that you have the exam in June in X city and if that'll be an issue.
Or are you just concerned with the IB guys being sketchy about you taking the CFA in general?
Both is probably the best answer. I don't want them to think I wouldn't be available to dedicate the hours needed to be successful because I have my test upcoming.
If someone came to me and said you can have this job or you can pass Level 2, of course I would take the job. That's the situation I feel like I'm in because if I were hired on somewhere new, my studying would decrease drastically. That being said, I'm okay with that.
I guess that brings me back to, when the topic comes up in the interview, is there a way to best frame that discussion to get these points across?
It's more positioning for down the road while also showing initiative currently. Went to a complete non-target, didn't have fantastic grades nor a great internship so it's taking everything I've got to stand out. During this internship seemed like a good time to knock out Level 2. Sure, the ideal job would have great exit opps/career progression and I wouldn't need CFA but I right now I can't say it will for sure happen and if worst case scenario I'm still in my current situation come July, to say that I passed (knock on wood) Level 2 CFA would be a leg up in my eyes.
From my understanding and experience, IB will generally be rather skeptical towards CFA and ive even seen instances where pursuing it has borderline hurt the prospects of a career in IBD
