Conviction status
I am pursuing a career as a stockbroker. I recently have landed some interviews with a few firms in NYC. However when I was 18 I was convicted of a felony for possession of stolen property. I am now 27 and have had no other run ins with the law. Would my conviction disqualify me from the Series 7 and other exams? I know you can get your records sealed unfortunately I don't have the money to do that.
Most wealth management firms will do a background check before hiring you. It's likely it'll cause a red light. You're in a bad situation buddy.
At ten years the conviction isn't an automatic dealbreaker. People make mistakes when they are young. What's going to matter is your attitude, both now and for the rest of your life: you must learn from your mistakes and move forward in a positive direction.
If you don't have the money to get is sealed, talk to a public defender about your options, they may be able to guide you. Also, maybe work another job to raise the money.
More to the point, you're looking at a job where you are to be entrusted with other people's money. It is incumbent upon you to make it clear that you can be trusted, both in character and judgement. The penalties for securities violations are severe and don't think that this business is like what you see in the movies, only a small minority of people do the crap you see in Wolf of Wall Street....and almost all of them land in prison. Especially now, the gov't is cracking down like never before, and if you do something bad you will probably be caught.
Ask yourself why you're going into brokering, and be really honest. Be honest with yourself, everything springs from that. If you're up for this, then take your best shot and know that anything is possible. Brokers are heavily regulated and it's a competitive industry, and it's not a get rich quick scheme. You can make a very good living, and you can enter at any age, just make sure you're thinking in the right direction. You don't need fancy suits or watches, you just need to do the work, use your head, and learn whatever you can from wherever/whomever you can.
Also: you don't need the stock market to become wealthy. PLENTY of people find a way to get rich and never step foot on Wall Street, and plenty of people in finance make their millions after leaving Wall Street to do something else. Usually, people become successful doing something they have an interest in, this way they want to put more effort into getting really good at it. There are many ways to your big picture goal, you just have to open your eyes and then act.
I wish you the best of luck.
I'm pretty sure you can't get licensed with a felony conviction. Sorry fella.
Thanks, I got a degree in business and while I was in college I started a mobile automotive business doing detailing, pointless dent removal, interior repair, etc. The business suited me fine when I was going to school but now I'm looking to get into something where I'm battling the weather and is a little more steady. I'm right at the 10yr mark with my conviction so I hope it would be easy to get my record sealed. I'm gonna contact a public defender this week. Thanks
