Current Senior Undergrad

I am feeling frustrated, disappointed, and not really sure what to change. I am an athlete with a 4.0 GPA at a top 5 liberal arts college. I have a decent background for finance given leadership experience in investment club, multiple summer finance internships, and strong coursework in economics and math. However, nothing seems to go my way. I am very positive and prepared in the few interviews I get now and then. I’ve had a few super days and have gotten mostly positive feedback from interviewers. From August to October, I had at least one networking call everyday, so I’ve done a solid job using my network. Now, I have applied for 650+ jobs with no scheduled interviews left. I don’t know what advice you can give, and I know the job market is poor. I don’t want to make excuses either and know I would be confused if I told my younger self how hard I have worked with nothing lined up.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps and advice to help you navigate your current situation:

  1. Self-Assessment and Improvement:

    • Interview Skills: Reflect on your interview performance. Even with positive feedback, there might be subtle areas for improvement. Consider seeking constructive criticism from trusted mentors or peers.
    • Soft Skills: Ensure your presentation is impeccable. This includes your attire, posture, and overall demeanor. Small details can make a significant difference.
  2. Networking:

    • Informational Interviews: Continue leveraging your network for informational interviews. These can provide insights into the industry and potentially lead to job opportunities. Quality over quantity is key.
    • Follow-Up: Don’t hesitate to follow up with contacts. Persistence, when done respectfully, can demonstrate your genuine interest and determination.
  3. Daily Goals and Rewards:

    • Structured Approach: Treat your job search like a job. Set daily goals, such as a specific number of applications or networking calls, and reward yourself only after achieving these goals.
    • Avoid Self-Medication: Use activities like video games or socializing as rewards rather than coping mechanisms.
  4. Mental Resilience:

    • Stay Positive: It’s crucial to maintain a positive attitude despite setbacks. Remember, the job market is challenging, but your persistence will pay off.
    • Constructive Distraction: Engage in activities that help you relax and stay positive. This can help you stay motivated and avoid burnout.
  5. Plan and Adapt:

    • Review Your Strategy: If your current plan isn’t yielding results, it might be time to reassess and adapt. Seek advice from career coaches or mentors to refine your approach.
    • Organize Your Efforts: Keep your job search organized. Track your applications, follow-ups, and networking efforts to ensure you’re covering all bases.
  6. Broaden Your Horizons:

    • Geographical Flexibility: Consider expanding your job search to different locations if feasible. Sometimes opportunities are more abundant in other regions.
    • Industry Flexibility: While finance is your primary goal, exploring related fields might open up new opportunities and provide valuable experience.

Remember, the job market is tough, but your hard work and dedication will eventually lead to success. Keep pushing forward, and don’t hesitate to seek support from your network and mentors.
