Dealing with potentially problematic new hire

Hi guys

In brief here's the situation: finished big 4 in UK and joined a leading company in its field as an analyst in the Fp&A department.

The old manager transferred internally to a different team so now I'm working for the VP directly.

He has been very complimentary of my efforts and I myself am willing to give all I have because I actually love the Job and the company. Problem is, they want to replace the manager. VP has said this is because he shouldn't be reviewing work and us staying till 8-10pm now and again shows he has failed I'm recruitment etc. And we need more people.

Problem is, if we hire a manager I believe that immediately slows down my promotion capabilities as I'd need him toget promoted for me to move up.

How do I approach the situation and convince the VP Ihave no issues working till 10 etc? Obviously someone with 2-3 years extra experience would be able to provid more insightful analysis but judging by progress, by time this person will get hired I would have had 9months with this company, and nearly a year by time person catches up with the internal workings of firm.

What would you recommend in this situation? How would you approach it? I don't want to sabotage future manager and I want to ideally stay at this firm long term.
