Do internship application essays really matter?

Currently applying to Summer 2027 positions. I know the resume is the most important thing, but I've noticed that a lot of firms require short response essays (stuff like "Why IB?” / “Why X firm specifically?”). With everything ramping up in January, it’s going to be a ton of essays, and since it's best to submit relatively soon after the application opens, how much effort should I realistically put into these?

I’ve already networked with most of the firms, so I’m mainly wondering whether these essays move the needle or are basically a formality. Would appreciate any insight!
