Do techs actually matter?
I'm on the verge of striking out for the time being (just one more process to go), and I've realized that I've never been rejected because of techs. I've gotten every single tech right in all but one of my interviews. As for that last interview—at an EB, no less—I got 4 techs wrong, but somehow still managed to make it to the following round. That round was fully behavioral, and it was once again where I got dinged.
I'm pretty much completely convinced that not only do techs not win you the offer, but for the most part, they don't really matter that much. Am I just bugging? I'm not diversity (straight Asian male), so it can't be that either.
I’d take a serious look at how you’re coming across in interviews. Techs are important but people don’t want someone who’s insufferable to be around
I know what my problem is, the feedback I always get is that I'm very awkward and nervous during interviews—just need to get more confident.
Bro just have a shot of tequila before your interview
I actually did this for some time when I was first recruiting
You need to do more mocks. See if your career center offers any with employers coming to campus.
They matter obv but to get an offer you need to sound like someone they would work with
What I do is write down a few points/ideas I want to touch on a tie to something I enjoy talking about. For example, I like to touch on how I learn and learning the fundamentals first, and mention that wherever I can during the interview and into my stories.
Also detach from the idea of getting an offer, feel like you don't need it. This will help you get out of your head. Just focus on answering the questions to the best of your ability and the actions you need to take and say within the interview. Find stories and things that you enjoyed doing/achieving and talk about those, this will come across much more passionately and you will feel like a real person.
Biggest thing is detaching. Then just talk away, everyone told me you have to be concise and articulate. That's cool and true to an extent. But if you're in your head you're going to completely sell. I would think about it for a second and then just talk away, it might be longer than average (2-3 minutes per response for something I could say in 1.5) but if you have decent social/storytelling skills it will be coherent enough. And if they like your stories, sense your passion, they will simply like you and once you get that, it doesn't matter what else you say or if you fail a tech.
People will hire someone they like and connected with and enjoyed being with over any technicals. The job is not that technical you will learn all you need in the role.
TLDR: Tell yourself you don't need the job and feel that, focus on answering each question to the best of your ability one at a time, pick stories you like and talk away it will be more passionate and come across better
