Emailing alumni, how high up can you go?

I'm curious, if there is an alumni who is a CEO, I'd assume cold emailing is a no no. But what about MDs or like CIOs. Would it be ok to email people like this, or stick to lower ranking folks?

I bet there's some kid at GSU who's emailed Ken Lewis.

I think the answer to this question has to do with your current level of employment and the size of the firm they work for. For example, if you are looking to gain an entry level, I would only go a few levels above that, but if you are MD level, you want to be at that level or higher. Also, like the above posters have said, if it a smaller boutique, it may be ok to try, but don't bother with the big boys IMO.

I would e-mail god if I could. Why limit yourself? I feel senior people are better that people who have only been out of school a year or 2 because what differentiates the analyst from you is he works at the firm, not necessarily that he has been successful there,so he would be more inclined to protect the image of himself and the firm. A senior person has been successful at the firm and might even have a responsibility to "watch for talent".

As high as you can go.

Might sound petty but saying you've spoke to (XYZ) before can sometimes help.
