ER Job in Tier 2 city vs continuing to look for FT IB/ER in Tier 1 city?

If I was deadset on ER as a career I'd agree with you, but I think I'd prefer to start my career in IB, which I may have not made clear originally. From what I've heard it seems easier to get a first year analyst role at some random boutique or filling in an open spot at a larger place than lateraling from ER to IB after a year or two - do you think going from ER -> IB like that is feasible?

Take the job you have now, I'm in a similar position, took an ER job last year on the west coast, waiting for market to pick up and I'll try moving to IB and to a better city. When I network with bankers many of them mention that when they are looking to hire someone they look at ER candidates if IB candidates aren't available.

A lot of the job listings for IB that I see require IB experience specifically - are you suggesting that that can be bypassed with good enough networking? Or more that if they don't have any candidates with IB experience then ER is next best?
