Exciting Summer Job
Hey everyone, new to WSO, and this is my first meaningful post.
I'm an engineering undergrad student in Montreal. Yeah... Engineering... Yet I'm always on the compter between classes checking up on my stocks and the markets in general.
All my friends keep asking me: '' Why are you in engineering, why don't you change programs and go into finance?'' My reply: '' Because I love to learn, and engineering taches me all kinds of things I wouldn't learn otherwise, whereas i am basically self-taught in the financial sector, and EVERY SINGLE DAY, I learn something new.''
Isn't life wonderful that way?
Anyways, for quite a while i was thinking about doing Prop. Trading, but stumbled onto IB not long ago. The more i read about it, the more I want to do it!
So i stared doing my DD and asked a ''high-up'' at RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) if they were hiring students as analysts for summer 2011. In short, no, they are only looking for full-time analysts.
My question to you is, which firms hire for this position in Montreal? How does an engineering student go about doing things?

So you love to learn new things, are very interested in trading, but have decided to pursue a job where you'll be editing semicolons at midnight on a friday night?
They way I see it, is like investing. Before you invest, you do your DD.
Before you do IB, you work as an analyst to learn the ins and outs of the job.
What are your thoughts? What other jobs in finance do you think would satisfy my thirst for knowledge?
I wasn't saying you shouldn't be an analyst. Obviously you would start off as an analyst in any field. What I was saying is that it seems like a disconnect in that you want to do IB even though you chose engineering because you "love to learn" as well as the fact that you like trading. IB is a great job, but you certainly don't go into it out of intellectual curiosity IMO.

Most summer analyst positions, if not all, have already been filled. Unless you find a good connection somewhere, you'll have to wait until 2012.
Engineering is a good major for the finance world though (as I'm sure you know if you've been reading WSO). Being from Montreal, however, your chances are slim because you're from a non-target.
First, I'd figure out exactly what it is you want to do. This summer, your best bet would be to look for an internship in Private Wealth Management, or something similar. This will improve your resume, and put you in a good position for next summer.

Thanks, Although are you sure McGill University is a non-target? It was rated #1 in Canada in the latest QS World University Rankings.
Don't dwell on the target/non-target idea so much. You go to a good university and judging from your original post you seem to have a mind and skill set that will go well with potential employers.

Not sure what recruiting schedule you're on, but in the US, accelerated recruiting just ended (GS/MS/JPM/BX), and OCR doesn't start until Jan/Feb. I'm sure there are still tons of spots open for summer analysts.
