Feeling like a loser...
I go to a top uni like Berkeley, WUSTL, cornell etc, got a 750+ in sat math yet just feel stupid. I haven't started interviewing prep as I am a freshman but I got my first interview and bombed the technicals, it was plain math just like the SAT, but somehow I just messed it up. I don't even know if I can ever get an internship, leetcode questions for SWE are too difficult and my dream is quant trading but I don't see that happening because the math is insanely tough, if I am screwing up IBD sat math how am I going to be a quant. If I am failing ibd questions, leetcode and how am I going to get an internship. What should I do, I feel I blew up my shot, should have gone to a easy state school, at least my ROI won't be negative.
I wouldn’t be too hard on yourself. At least in regards to SWE and trading interviews it mostly comes down to spending enough time grinding leetcode/mental math/brainteasers. It’s pretty unrealistic to expect to do well in an interview without first spending enough time studying those topics.
What are you planning to major in?
Economics but trying to switch to math and cs because its more versatile since idk if I want to do ibd. I really want to break into QT/SWE but idk if my goals are too lofty so I applied IBD but then I messed that up so I posted here lol.
Chill bro. Just keep practicing.
You’re a freshman so I would relax. If you are already getting interviews and focusing on this stuff then you are ahead of the curve. In regards to technicals, keep practicing and really understand the concepts rather than just memorizing. Secondly, on the math part in interviews, being comfortable in interviews takes time and you will mess up. Don’t be too hard on yourself and keep getting after it.
Honestly SWE might be easier to break into than IBD at the moment. The tech job market is super hot rn since a lot of companies have been really aggressive in hiring devs and cs majors. It requires setting time aside to study, but grinding leetcode and hackerrank does help with understanding algorithms. Plus if you decide to major in CS, that’ll give you a good foundation of concepts such as big O notation, space complexity, recursion, graphs, dynamic programming, min/max cut, etc. which also helps in SWE interviews.
