Financial Reporting Analyst/Accountant seeking Wall Street

Graduated several years ago with a Finance degree from a Private University in NYC. Took an Finance Analyst position at a publicly traded corporation and later moved into the accounting department as an accounting/financial analyst, working on balance sheet and income statement analysis and reporting. Later moved to a private company working as an accountant/analyst in the financial reporting department. Total of 3 years work experience in accounting and finance related to Financial Reporting.

My career interests had always seen myself working on Wall Street, yet somehow I failed to follow through and make a meaningful effort to pursue my goal. I had not pursued a Wall Street analyst position during or after college, as I had no internships and experience so I did not feel I had a chance of landing any positions. My interests continue to keep me in touch with business and the stock market, in that I continue learning while managing my own personal finances and investments.

Now it is several years after graduating with a Finance degree and working the past three years in accounting at a corporation, I want to pursue a switch of careers and try to break into an analyst position within the financial services industry. My focus has been on networking and trying to get my resume submitted to analyst positions at firms where my friends work.

I have just begun my search and venture, but wanted to hear some advice from others with similar objectives. If my personal network of friends does not land me a position I will seek the help from headhunters/recruiters specializing in accounting/finance.

Any tips or advice you wish to share would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm... if your firm is prestigious and you have the scores etc., you could perhaps consider b-school -> associate? If your college sends a lot of people to Wall Street, consider older alum networking in addition to friends. Ditto with fraternity if you were in one. Focus on your "story." Headhunters are generally for senior people with lots of very specific past experience.
