Firm is changing names, how to reflect on resume
So this is probably a dumb question, but something that I just thought about. The firm that I am working for is changing their name in the next couple of months from Firm X to Firm Y. On my resume what is the best practice for this?
Firm Y July 2013-Present
Position A
Responsibilities
or
Firm Y October 2014-Present
Position A
Responsibilities
Firm X July 2013-October 2014
Position A
Responsibilities
or even something like
Firm X changed to Firm Y July 2013-present
Position A
Responsibilities
I just don't want to lose out on something because of a background check that says I only worked at Firm Y for a couple of months when technically I've been working with them for over a year.
I am no expert on this but I think as long as you clearly convey the name change you should be good.
Here is what I would do:
2.a. If X is better known/carries more weight, I would put July 2013-Present Firm X (renamed 'Y' in Sept 2014)
2.b. If Y is better known/carries more weight, I would put July 2013-Present Firm Y (formerly 'X')
I've always seen it as XYZ Corp. (Formerly ABC LLC)
is it the result of a merger like Paine Webber going to UBS where both firms are recognizable? or is it like a completely new name no one's ever heard of? if the former and your position didn't change, I'd just list the new name. if the latter, I'd do the (formerly XYZ) as above poster suggested.
I've always thought it was important to show job continuity so my old resume had "X Company (f/k/a "Y" Company or formerly "Y Company) especially if the responsibilities remain the same and the firm is simply changing its name.
I've been it as New Company Name (Formerly Old Company Name) on resumes
