For those involved in the hiring process internally , why does it take so long

Just wondering what the hiring process looks like from the other side. What are you doing for 8+ weeks? Does it really take that much time to meet with however many candidates for an hour or so, strike out the ones you dont like, then just move on?

Had a panel interview today and they said next steps are going to be in 2 or 3 weeks from now. I get that everyones busy but what are you guys doing for all that time.

Having been on both sides, it really comes down to HR and how organized the group is in its recruiting process.

My rule of thumb is to follow up after a week if nothing is heard and maybe follow up once more from there.

I can relay a few different anecdotes:

  • At my last role, the recruiting process for new hires (excluding myself) was a bit disjointed so it took a while just to sift through resumes and have someone come in for an interview. Once the interviews were completed, then it took time to get back since it would fall to the wayside (seriously).
  • For my current role, the entire interview process to offer was literally less than a week (not the norm to be fair, but I was in a few processes at the time so they moved expeditiously)
  • For a similar role I interviewed for recently, the interview process took six-plus weeks

My best advice is to keep plowing ahead with different interview processes. All it takes is one solid offer!
