Help Me Land This Job
I'm looking for some WSO advice on how to land a position I interviewed for today. I'm a real estate guy and I'll be attending a MRED program this fall, so in the interim, I wanted to get a new paid gig for this summer as a resume boost and lead in to the program and future internships/positions. My background is top analyst and an office broker at a top brokerage platform and have done minor acquisitions work as well as property management for a multi-family family shop, so I really want to add some solid development experience.
I reached out to a REIT that also does development and the head of development agreed to meet with me for coffee. We got along fantastically, he seemed like a great guy, and the work they do is unbelievably cool. He said that he's looking to hire a development analyst but he's unsure if it's worth the time to bring me in when he already knows I'm leaving in August. Still, although he's interviewing less qualified people (albeit people who won't leave in 6 months) as well, he's not ruling me out and he said to let him think about it.
I emailed him a thank you for the meeting so I don't want to bother him yet, but he told me to keep him updated with grad schools so in a few weeks when I commit to one I want to send him another email and reaffirm that I really would want to work there this summer.
TL;DR: How do I go about convincing him that I'm worth hiring for basically a paid summer internship without being sleazy, pushy, or inappropriate about it?
It seems now that the ball is in his park. You have no control over that now, and basically any action you do now will only work against you. However, definitely keep in touch. I'd suggest keep looking out for other opportunities, keep busy.
Bah, you're probably right - I just hate the helplessness. I'll keep looking.
In times like this, I'd like to think that many others who are successful have been in our situation. Keep hustling, my friend! (Personally, I've had 5 superdays and 0 offers so I'm still hustling.)
I'd agree with this. That feeling of helplessness is very frustrating. If he wants you bad enough he'll take you.
