How did you decide

Hey everyone, this is my first post here after spending a lot of time reading through your forums for general advice and information about the finance industry.

A little about me, I am currently a double major in Finance and Econ at a school that would not be considered "target" or probably even close by anybody. I am at this particular university because I served in the military and it was the closest institution to my base while I was still in and when I got out it was impractical to try to move and apply to a new school.

I currently have a ~3.8 and 3 semesters left. I am not looking for a ton of advice or a pat on the back about how my GPA or whatever else will help land me a job in an elite IB to make me feel better. What I am curious about, however, is how many of you made your decision on what area of finance you ultimately made as your career and what skills or characteristics you felt helped you in said area. Please keep replies to people who are either nearly graduated and have had successful internships or people who are currently working (regardless of prestige)

Money is obviously not a huge deal to me or I wouldn't have worked for less than 20k a year jumping out of planes and doing push ups so please nobody hit me with the immature "Its all about the bill y'all" type nonsense.

Thanks
