How does lateraling work?

Hi incoming analyst here. I'll start at a MM in London in one of their top groups and am looking to lateral as soon as possible. How long to wait until it makes sense applying and are there any headhunters or should you just spam applications?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about lateraling:

  1. Timing to Lateral:

    • It’s recommended to stay at your current firm for at least six months before attempting to lateral. If you try to move too soon (e.g., within a month or two), interviewers may not take you seriously, even if it’s an obvious "upgrade."
    • Ideally, staying for a year is even better, as it demonstrates commitment and allows you to build a stronger resume with more deal experience.
  2. How to Approach Lateraling:

    • Resume Preparation: Highlight your deal experience or transferable skills. WSO’s investment banking resume review service is highly recommended for this.
    • Networking: Leverage your network from undergrad or current colleagues. Reach out to associates or senior bankers in the groups you’re targeting after applying to positions. A well-crafted email asking for insights into group culture can set you apart.
    • Applications: Many lateral positions are posted online, and applying directly can work. Some users have successfully landed interviews and offers by applying blindly online.
    • Headhunters: While some elite boutiques (EBs) use headhunters, many bulge brackets (BBs) post jobs directly on their websites or LinkedIn. Keep an eye on these platforms and sign up for job alerts.
  3. Unstructured Process:

    • The lateral hiring process is often unstructured. It can take anywhere from a week to several months, and you might be the only candidate at a superday. Be prepared for variability in timelines.
  4. Key Considerations:

    • Your reason for lateraling should focus on professional growth, such as moving to a larger platform, gaining more deal experience, or aligning with a specific industry focus.
    • Avoid appearing as someone who "jumps ship" too quickly, as this can raise red flags for interviewers.
  5. Additional Tips:

    • Most lateral positions open up after bonuses are paid out, typically around June/July.
    • If you’re targeting non-London cities, ensure you have a strong reason for the move, as banks are wary of candidates using these locations as backups.
