How to apply urgency in a long job interview process
I’ve been interviewing at a firm for close to a month now. I’ve done 3 phone/ teams interviews, an in person interview, a modeling test, and I have another teams interview Monday.
I like the company and would love to work there, but I also have other offers on the table and don’t want to keep dragging this on put all my eggs into one basket and lose my other offers if this position doesn’t end up working out.
How can I go about mentioning this to them? I want to ensure they know I am committed to the process and they are my top choice, but I also want them to know I need an answer soon (next 2 weeks).
I was in your exact situation. At the time I was unemployed and I had the process ongoing with Company A (not the dream job but I needed something).
Got a call from a HH for Company B, a great buy side role. I was very straight with them and I told "guys I really really like this role but for full disclosure I am at an advanced stage for another company". They understood and were quite quick with the process. After 3 weeks, on the same day, I got the offer from Company A and B.
Moral of the story is that you have to be transparent and state that you really care about this role. If they like you they'll be fast. Good luck
In the most respectful way possible, you tell them exactly what you just wrote, either in a heart to heart phone call with a decision maker if you think the relationship is at that point or via email if not. A lot of being a professional, especially a junior professional, is grabbing people by the metaphorical collar and finding a nice way to say “I need you to focus and make a fucking decision.”
I have seen so many “decision meetings” on hiring or some part of the hiring process get cancelled, postponed, ignored, etc. not out of malice or anything but because real estate people are busy and have ADD and rarely focus on non-real estate things. Sometimes they need to be reminded that they also have to run a company.
Yup - was 3/5 rounds (just passed Excel test) and told them I had an offer. They expedited the process and I had the next two with a SMD and CEO in a week.
From there, they ended up not giving anyone an offer just fyi and I took the offer I had in hand but companies are willing to do that for certain candidates.
It's also a tough job market out there and a name/company isn't end all be all. You could have much better colleagues, learn more, and build a career at the firm you have in hand vs. brand name firm you're dying to work for and look back in 20 years for the better.
So many stories of "I wanted to work in nyc after undergrad" "I wanted to work at xyz best firm at the time" that didn't work out and they became very successful anyway in that market or a smaller market.
100% agree with this. People get busy and the markets are so volatile right now. I would be fully transparent with both groups.
Just providing a different perspective here - it depends what caliber of firm you’re dealing with. In this market, some firms will not budge on their process. Happened to me earlier this year with a MF.
