How to not screw this up

Summer Analyst at EB hopeful here. Had a call a few days ago with an MD in an EB. After a great and naturally flowing chat, she mentioned that she would be a strong "advocate" for me internally, provided I wanted to be in her group (easier than referring me to other MD's). She then put me in touch with a VP, who introduced me (with a good word) to a rather grumpy guy in HR for more info on other logistics and timelines. Not sure HR knows the original source was the MD. I have a solid finance background and a sophomore internship in PE, and I'm just doing technical prep now. There is nothing specific from HR as yet. I did not expect my first run at networking this summer to go this way, and I don't want to mess this up. How do I keep moving the chains here and how do I not mess this up?

Yes generalist. I will preference the MD's group in my application. I just wasn't too sure how to play the recruitment process, without talking to the MD about every little update from the VP or folks in HR. Should I just go along with the process with HR and maybe once in a while reach out to the MD and VP with a quick update from my end and general check in?
