IBD FT Recruiting from Undergrad
I am currently a junior undergraduate student and was wondering when recruitment season for full time positions begin for IB. I am doing valuation this summer and am looking to pivot over to IB after this summer. I go to a non-target and was wondering what my chances were and when I should begin recruiting. I know most places fill FT roles with former summer interns.
Some applications will come out during the summer but the real major push is the two/three weeks right after summer interns leave, when everyone is scrambling to convert their SA to FT or find FT people to replace SA who won't be staying. After that period, there will still be openings popping up here and there, probably all the way through October, and then it's pretty slim after that.
You must network TREMENDOUSLY if you are from a non-target with only valuation.
Competitors will be mostly IB summers from various firms who want to lateral and even consulting people from Big 3 who want IB.
sure but even then good luck convincing a group of bankers to hire you over the 10 other kids with ib experience. even for internships from a non-target its damn near almost impossible to get in.
Did you do IB at FT at some point in your IB career?
Honestly, it is not impossible. I go to a complete non-target and did not have an IB internship when I first started for FT recruiting. Try to network with people and get interviews through that. I got an interview, simply because the Analyst and I played the same sport in college and he liked me.
you're missing the point. look at how hard it was to even get an interview. you don't think there's bias at the interview stage? think about this way.. ib interviews are a joke technically even at "technical" shops, just takes a week or 2 to prep so fit is what gets people the job. most candidates i've seen in superdays come off as ok likability wise so what are the odds a bank is going to take an additional risk by giving an offer to a non target kid?

OP- what @itsomma" said is how it will be. I'd network passively starting now throughout the summer so that you have contacts to follow up with when summer internships end and the FT orgy begins. GL
100% disagree. Most people did not even care about my non-target school, because they liked my experience, and I did well with the fit questions, since I have a good story. And when the question came up about my school, I had a good answer to spin it positive.
OP, don't let this negativity affect you. Network, and work harder than everyone else and it will pay off.
In a similar spot as OP, how hard would it be for me to lateral from S&T Summer Analyst at a BB to IB?
I went through FT recruiting and moved from MO role to BB IB. I did not network but applied to anything and everything I saw. FT picks up right after SA to FT offers go out and firms need to replace or fill up FT classes.
I was honest through the interview process with at least 10 firms and do not believe that me being a non-target changed my candidacy since other interviewees had the same amount of experience and background. I did not focus on networking but did reach out to contacts I already had to see how I should prepare, not whether they could refer/help me. I got instant rejected from some firms, went through the pipeline with others, and received 2 offers. Best piece of advice is know your technicals, be able to sell yourself, and be a good combination of smart and likeable.
In all honesty, recruiting is about persistence and a lot of luck. I wish you the best. Never give up!
