I'm not liking my new job, need advice

Some context: I started my career out of undergrad at a well known tech company in a Corporate FP&A role 2 years ago. I really enjoyed the nature of this work and my team/company culture, but the work was super high-level and after 2 years in this role I knew I wanted/needed experience with bottoms up financial forecasting, budgeting, and financial management especially in a cross-functional capacity.

An exciting opportunity came up to join a top CPG firm supporting Brand and Product Marketing Finance that I took. Not only did it offer a higher salary/bonus (+35% bump) and more seniority, but the role was also sold to me as having those experiences I was looking for. Unfortunately, it's been 2 months now and I'm really not enjoying the work and I don't think the experience aligns with what I want to do in the future... instead of managing budgets and working strategically with partners on marketing spend in the context of their brands and products, a lot of the work so far is related to purchase orders and invoices. I feel like I'm a glorified AP clerk at this point, and it's honestly making me worry that having this experience on my resume will hurt me.

I raised this issue (very tactfully) with my manager and even my skip level, and I've been reassured by both that the job has more to it then the invoice bullshit I've been seeing so far. But even with that being said, I feel like the foundation of this job is related to invoices and purchasing.

Is this normal in a marketing finance function? Should I start looking for a new job immediately? Or should I try to stick it out for 6 months to experience the job in its entirety as much as I can? I could really use some advice from more experienced members in the community.

I appreciate any insights you can provide!

So, not a corporate finance guy but I might be able to offer some insight. First, with the economy slowed down, it makes sense that the nature or the role would change and it's very likely that you are only doing this work because other activities in you role wouldn't be filled at this point. Personally, would recommend that you stick it out. And don't worry about your resume because you still have your previous work experience and you can still reword your resume for your current job.

Thanks for the insight. I've actually already begun thinking about how to spin my current role on my resume and rewording to make it sound pretty sexy. That being said, how short of a job stint is too short to put on a resume? At this point I think I can stick it out for 6 months... do you think that would hinder me from recruiting elsewhere?

So you were at your last job for two years. Job hopping only looks bad if you consistently do it which isn't the case in your situation. However, I would try to stick it out for six months so it doesn't look too obvious.
