In Serious Need of Internship Advice - Is it too late?

I’m a junior at Rutgers with two previous private equity internship experiences. I officially struck out with all the known banks and have nothing lined up for this summer.

What are my options here? Should I begin to cold email boutique banks in NYC? I see there are a lot of them on axial.net

Looking forward to everyone’s advice.

Yes and some places re-opened applications so I took advantage of that and networked my way in getting interviews

Try delaying your graduation by one semester and recruiting again if possible. Helps if you were on pace to graduate a year early so a small buffer isn't too bad. Or try to get a small boutique IB or PE shop for this summer and grind your ass off to recruit FT. I know the feeling bro. Don't give up hope. I also go to a B10 school and while I was getting far in processes and had a good amount of interviews last cycle, nothing was converting. Eventually nabbed a BB offer at the end of summer. Best of luck

Hey man, I was just recently in the same position, semi target no offers but am extremely interested in IB. Struck out with many big banks but was able to settle with a boutique. Keep networking, reach out to anyone possible, even cold call if needed.

Another approach would be to add on a one year masters program and get something small this summer, then do a SA 2023. This is what I was considering doing until I landed a position, and still might depending on what I can do for FT recruiting.

Don't lose hope, you'll get something eventually and all the weight will be offer your chest. Best of luck!

Thank you, I really appreciate it. I saw the MSF idea somewhere here, would it have to be a top program such as Vandy/UT-Austin/USC,MIT?

I’d say that coming from programs of that caliber are an excellent choice. However there are programs all across the country that place well in IB or consulting.

Maybe try to network with students at programs you’re interested to see how their recruiting is going. Even potentially find people at banks you’d like to work at and see what their opinion would be on programs of such.

Cheers

Might be a little late on the internship front unless you're able to network with people at the right time (i.e. you speak to them right as a spot opens up by someone dropping out). But tbh it seems a little unlikely. I think a better bet, as mentioned above would be to delay a semester and try recruiting for internships in summer 2024. Alternatively, keep reaching out to new people and reconnect with the same people you did for internships to ask about full-time positions. This might be slightly difficult since most FT roles are filled by SA return offers, but it's possible.

In the meantime, I'd suggest seeing if you could snag a SA spot in a boutique or do something else that is somewhat related to banking this summer and still show that you did something. Given that you have previous buy-side experience, if a FT spot opens up I don't think they would use a lack of IB SA role against you.

Thanks for the insight; I appreciate it! I’ve begun to email boutiques in multiple states, just waiting on a replay to get on the phone.
