Based on the most helpful WSO content, being under 21 during your summer analyst internship is not uncommon and shouldn't significantly hinder your ability to network or connect with your team. Here are some key takeaways and advice:

  1. Drinking Isn't Mandatory: Many interns and analysts have been in your position. You don't need to drink to fit in. If you're at a bar or social event, you can order a non-alcoholic drink like club soda with lime—it looks like a cocktail and avoids drawing attention.

  2. Fake ID Risks: Using a fake ID is risky, especially if senior bankers or colleagues notice. It could harm your reputation and even jeopardize your internship. It's better to avoid this route.

  3. Alternative Socializing: Suggest or participate in non-drinking activities. For example, group dinners, team outings, or casual coffee chats are great ways to bond without alcohol being involved.

  4. Focus on Work Ethic: Your performance and attitude at work will matter far more than whether you join for drinks. Be professional, reliable, and approachable during work hours.

  5. Be Honest if Asked: If the topic of drinking comes up, you can casually mention you're not 21 yet. Most people will understand and won't make it a big deal.

Remember, networking is about building genuine connections, not just sharing drinks. Your ability to engage in meaningful conversations and show interest in your colleagues' work and experiences will leave a lasting impression.

I gotchu. I guess what I’m wondering is I’ve heard my group does happy hours 1-2x/week. Do you think skipping all of these while the other interns all go would have any effect?

I'm based in London where 18 is the minimum age for drinking.

I however don't drink due to my religion, so I always order soda. I've never been asked why I'm not drinking.

Frankly, all of such events are somewhat professional, so colleagues don't ever drink heavily for obvious reasons.
