Interviewing during hiring freeze!!!
Hi everyone,
would appreciate any opinions on this. I got interested in a vacancy i saw advertised online. One of my good friends is a very senior girl at the firm, so i told her and she said the firm has a hiring freeze at current time but advised me to apply anyway and said she will put in a recommendation for me. soon after she came back saying that it seems the job wont go live until end of the year so i thought i may not hear back till then. to my surprise i got a call asking me to go for an interview for the job next week!!! i find it strange that they told my friend they arent hiring then ask me to come in! could it be that this is a much needed post to fill or maybe someone quit and they need to fill the role! why would they advertise jobs if they are not intending to take anyone on.
thanks
I've interviewed a couple times during a hiring freeze. I never got the job as an internal from the same cost center was taken over me so head count was raised but I was able to build some good relationships.
You could be correct though, they need to fill the position asap. They could also just be doing a favor for your friend. Either way this is an opportunity for you should take advantage of. Go into the interview with the full intention of getting hired and proving you are the right personf for the job. Do not worry about the hiring freeze as it is beyond your control.
Could be that HR don't know what the fuck they're doing...a pretty safe assumption.
Have people seen the "look like the buyside" ads on here recently, they're amazing! well done, someone has done their market research.
Way to go, good luck. I landed three internships in a two week period right in the middle of the crash. There's always an opportunity if you're really willing to look for it and work at it....maybe not the ideal opportunity, but opportunity nonetheless.
Oh, and BTW.....fuck HR
For what it's worth, the firm I work for has been on a "hiring freeze" since March, and we've grown our staff by 10%. Maybe you're interviewing here haha.
Go straight for it and flat out ask in the interview if you are wasting your time. Worst that can happen is you don't get the job, maybe you impress the guy with your directness and lack-of-bullshit and he puts in a good word for you or remembers your name!

Basically I screwed up coming out of my senior year and got into a job that I absolutely despise. So recently I've been cold-emailing and calling like a mad man and have had a decent amount of success.
My biggest prospective lead is the fact that I have an alumni that works at a BB and also have a family friend who is pretty high up at the same BB. The alumni I'm sitting down with next week for an informal type of arrangement and my family friend has gotten me in the door with a Manager in IBD. The only problem (other than getting through these interviews) is that his particular bank is in a hiring freeze. I understand that going through the motions and planting the seed is important regardless of the freeze, but is there ANY chance I can still land something now? May be a dumb question, but i'm desperate to get out of my current situation and into IBD FINALLY.
Keep pressing your case. Anything is possible. I landed three internships (f500, ER, marketing) in one month at the pit of the recession without having ANY finance experience.....and if I can break in, I'm thoroughly convinced that anyone who applies themselves can.
Honestly, the worst that can happen is the you do not get the job and you are back you where you started. Keep pushing and making connections, this will only help you in the future.
Yeah, both of your posts make absolute sense.
UFO: The only problem there is I don't have enough $$ to live on to take on an unpaid internship at the moment. I understand that this is probably my BEST case at breaking in, but living wise its just unrealistic -- any ideas?
Bobb: I completely agree with you and thats on the forefront of my mind. I'm just in a place where I (thankfully) realized I need to get out of here ASAP. After a year of thinking this was the place for me, I finally came to my senses and now know that I need out, so I'm just trying to push.
