Intro phone chat turned into a first round interview?

Hey guys,

Long time lurker, but this is my first time posting.

So, I reached out to a few people at a BB in their M&A group asking to get to know more about the firm, the team, etc. I reached out to one more individual who said that they would be happy to chat. The "chat" turned into an hour long interview, with a set of clearly predetermined questions. They gave no indication prior that it would be anything more than a chat for me to get to know more about the team.

I did okay during the course of the interview, but I think I definitely could have done better had I had some time to prepare. I took too long to answer a few questions, but I got everything right for the most part (needed to be nudged in the right direction a few times, though). Mental math was also slow.

My question is, do you guys think that this was a first round interview, or just an intense first screen? I would think that for a first round, they would give some heads up prior. This is the first I am hearing of something like this happening for a formal recruiting process for a BB. This could also be more common than I think - not too sure.

Thank you in advance.

Thanks! I am just confused more than anything as to why I wasn't given any time to prepare, when odds are, other people going for the same position would have had some notice. Have you heard of something like this happening before?

Hey man, it's happened to me before at an elite pure RX shop, where they asked if I had some time to chat. The chat started off with the banker asking if I had a pen and paper, jumping immediately into the interview. Luckily I had already been preparing for a while, so I did well, but I do think that it's kind of crappy that they didn't give you a heads up beforehand. I think right now there's no point in worrying, just study up and make sure that you're ready at any given moment.
