Investment Banking Summer Internship
I am a long time reader, but first time poster. I go to a Canadian university and am very interested in pursuing Investment Banking as a career following graduation. I understand that getting an internship is the best way to go. I am currently a second year at a Canadian university. We have decent OCR on campus and most banks come to us for students. My GPA is decent, 3.6+. I've been pretty involved with school finance clubs, however, haven't had any leadership positions. I will be trying to get some leadership positions for third year. I had an internship at a big 5 bank in a MO position and this summer I have an analyst stint at a credit rating agency. I want to best prepare for next years recruitment so I may be able to secure a IB position. Any advice or guidance is greatly appreciated.
someone please help me
try to reach out to anyone you know in IB or a related field or try to expand your network so they can teach you about the business or help you learn more.
Also try to get into a role in one of the clubs (i.e president, treasurer)
It's also key to know current events so read the WSJ & BB and if you're a nerd (which isn't bad) look up the terms and everything you don't know in an article.
Finally and maybe most important is research the industry and what IB actually is and what analysts do, how companies are valued and different valuation methodologies, what goes into the creation of a pitchbook etc.
Hope that helps, its some things that have worked so far for me
It sounds like you're moving in the right direction. I would first suggest look into your fellow alumni to see if any of them are in IB, because that makes networking much easier. Reach out to them 1st and mention all of your achievements and GPA at your school. Also, internships especially while your still in college, is always the way to go.
thanks a lot for the help, i really do appreciate it. i've been hearing a lot about getting "deal" experience to best position myself. i'm assuming the only way tog et actual "deal" experience is through a local boutique. is there any other ways you could get "deal" experience? I don't have the time to work at a boutique this summer, but I still want my resume to be well-rounded and best position myself. also, how would i work on polishing my softer skills? aside from getting an interview, i know it's important to actually perform well in interviews. any advice is appreciated!
