No, it's not too late. Search fund internships are unpaid and all you're doing is googling and copy pasting. It costs literally nothing for the founder to hire you as long as you've demonstrated you're decently hardworking and reliable. Absolutely start cold emailing.
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions, I just have a couple more quick questions for you. Apart from search funds, what type of shop is most likely to be receptive to letting freshmen intern over the summer? Would IB/PE/VC boutiques be too much of a long shot? If so, what types of boutiques should I be aiming for?
Your highest chances are at a search fund, but it doesn't hurt to email IB/PE/VC boutiques. When I did it, many said that it was too late for that summer, but they kept my email and contacted me the next year for interviews.
Do you mind telling me when you reached out and they said it was too late for that summer? I'm assuming around the same time as right now (Mid-Late February)?
Oh boy I asked way too late, like around April. I already had a search fund internship at that point and I wanted to leverage it to get a boutique IB internship right after it ended. No luck unfortunately because of my timing. February is fine, very doable for search funds.
No way man. Reach out to as many firms as you can find and potentially offer to work for free. The biggest regret I have was not getting finance experience on my resume Freshman year. People say you are young, but I think it allows people to stand out for Junior Summer Recruitment and builds your resume.
Finding internship work has never been easier with online work becoming commonplace. Grind for any opportunity you can find and I know it'll put you in a great position.
Thanks for the advice, what would you say my other options are apart from search funds, as in what type of firms should I be aiming for?
