Is wealth management as bad of an idea as people say it is?

WSO makes Wealth Management seem like a dead end career. I am currently in commercial banking, and im trying to make a career/city change (not loving my current job, and I want to move back to my home city).

I have an interview coming up for one of the bigger financial institutions/wealth managers in the city. Im starting to worry that if I go through with this and get the job that I will regret it. Am I setting myself up for a bad career path if I go commercial banking to Wealth management? Are there decent exit opportunities from WM? The dream would be to one day work in equity research or asset management in some capacity. Not sure if thats attainable from WM. Would love to hear some thoughts from others to calm my nerves.

Terrible decision, Is your hometown a target city? Wealth Management as a whole is just crap work. You’ll have better exit opportunities staying in CCB and moving to a BB to do it.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems there are differing opinions on the future of Wealth Management. Some believe that the rise of Fintech could threaten jobs in this sector, while others argue that the value of human interaction and relationship management in Wealth Management cannot be replaced by technology.

In terms of career progression, it appears that Wealth Management professionals add value by creating and maintaining relationships, which could be a valuable skill in many roles. However, it's also noted that Ultra High Net Worth (UHNW) clients can be very fee-sensitive, which could make it challenging to justify high fees for similar investment strategies.

As for transitioning from Commercial Banking to Wealth Management, it's important to consider your long-term career goals. If your dream is to work in equity research or asset management, you might want to research how often professionals make that transition from Wealth Management.

Remember, every career path has its pros and cons, and it's crucial to choose a path that aligns with your interests, skills, and long-term goals. Good luck with your decision!
