Job Market Suggestions

Hi All,

I graduate in December with my MBA, concentrations in Finance and Project Management. I also have a Bachelors in Finance and about 16 months of experience, 9 in Client Service and 7ish in middle office. I was wondering in this job market what role I can look at and salaries I can expect for those roles. I have been applying like crazy but haven’t landed an interview well over 100 applications in. Cities I am looking at include New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Dallas, but I am really open to anywhere.

All advice and recommendations are appreciated

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and suggestions for your situation:

Job Roles to Target

  1. Corporate Finance/FP&A Roles:

    • These roles are often a good fit for MBA graduates with a finance concentration. Companies in F500 or large organizations may offer positions like Senior Financial Analyst or Finance Manager.
    • Salaries: Typically range from $105K to $115K for MBAs, with potential bonuses up to $25K depending on the company and location.
  2. Middle Office Roles in Financial Services:

    • Given your prior experience in middle office, you could target roles in risk management, operations, or compliance at banks or asset management firms.
    • Salaries: Expect around $90K to $120K depending on the firm and city.
  3. Project Management Roles:

    • With your project management concentration, you could explore roles in consulting firms, tech companies, or even industrial firms. Look for positions like Project Manager or Program Manager.
    • Salaries: These can vary widely but often range from $90K to $130K, with higher figures in tech or consulting.
  4. Client-Facing Roles:

    • Your client service experience could be leveraged for roles in relationship management, business development, or account management in financial services or consulting.
    • Salaries: Typically range from $80K to $110K, with potential for performance-based bonuses.
  5. Real Estate Private Equity (REPE):

    • If you have an interest in real estate, some funds or developers may value your MBA and finance background. However, note that many REPE roles prefer candidates with direct real estate experience.
    • Salaries: Entry-level roles post-MBA might start around $100K all-in.

Job Market Challenges

  • MBA Expectations vs. Reality: Many MBA grads enter the market with high expectations, but as noted in WSO threads, very few roles offer $200K+ packages right out of school. Most roles fall in the $100K-$150K range, depending on the industry and location.
  • Geographic Flexibility: While you're open to multiple cities, competition in finance-heavy hubs like New York and Chicago can be intense. Expanding your search to secondary markets or less competitive cities might yield better results.

Actionable Recommendations

  1. Networking:

    • Cold-email professionals in your target roles or companies for informational interviews. This approach has been highlighted as effective in breaking into competitive industries.
    • Leverage LinkedIn and alumni networks from your MBA program to connect with hiring managers or recruiters.
  2. Certifications:

    • Consider pursuing certifications like CFA Level 1 or PMP (Project Management Professional) to strengthen your profile and stand out in applications.
  3. Tailored Applications:

    • Customize your resume and cover letter for each role, emphasizing relevant skills and experiences. Highlight your MBA concentrations and how they align with the job requirements.
  4. Targeted Companies:

    • Focus on firms with structured MBA hiring programs, as they are more likely to value your degree and experience. Examples include large corporates, consulting firms, and financial institutions.
  5. Consider Temporary Roles:

    • If you're struggling to land full-time offers, consider contract or temporary roles in your target field. These can provide valuable experience and potentially lead to permanent positions.

Salary Expectations by City

  • New York, Boston, Chicago: Higher salaries but also higher competition and cost of living. Expect $100K-$130K for most MBA-level roles.
  • Philadelphia, Dallas: Slightly lower salaries ($90K-$120K) but more affordable living costs and potentially less competition.

Keep applying, but also focus on networking and leveraging your MBA program's career services. The job market can be tough, but persistence and a strategic approach will pay off!

What MBA program are you graduating from? 16 months of total experience is on the low end for most MBA admissions.

Did you do any internships during your MBA program and how much networking have you done?

Yeah this is where it gets rough. Not a great MBA program, it was at the same school as my undergraduate around the 100 ranking. As the school wasn’t top tier the connections aren’t either.
