Job Search Etiquette
I am about to graduate from a very non-target state school, so you can imagine how surprised I was when a PE firm listed an analyst posting on the school's job board. I e-mailed a cover letter and resume per the instructions on Thursday. Would it be appropriate to call at some point to 'make sure it was received' or would he likely view that as an annoyance (the point of contact is a VP)? This is a rare opportunity at my school, so I don't want to blow it by pissing the guy off. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I would probably wait since he is likely busy doing things besides recruiting. If they have an HR group you can always call them and make sure it was received.
Allow me to apologize in advance for thinking out loud. Perhaps it would be best to call HR and have them check for you. Or you could email the VP and thus allow him to reply on his own time. However, a lot of people see direct phone calls as indicators of confidence and maturity so perhaps it would be best to call him... If you choose to call him, tell him about how you're very interested and that you're just calling to make sure that all the necessary information/paperwork has been received. Nothing over the top, just enough to show you care. Good luck!
Uh no. No direct phone calls. That's generally seen as an intrusion unless the number is listed on the job posting.
So if it is listed then it could be acceptable? It's the same number that's on the Contact Us page of their website.
I would still default to email but if it's listed then it's fair game.
I say call. shows initiative
Don't call - email is fine, you can wait a few days then follow up if you don't hear back.
ABSOLUTELY CALL!
I just got a job with a MM firm, their posting said "no phone calls". I emailed an associate there from linkedin, he said to call, I called, left a msg, 5 mins later got a call back for interview. Be persistent. Worse that can happen is they say no, but the answer is already no if you dont ask!
I honestly think if I had not called I would have not gotten an interview.
Call and say basically "following up with the resume I sent to make sure it was received, and also I would like to know if I can schedule an interview with you please"
(PS I am not a college kid just dolling out random advice that is unproven, I have lots of experience with this and it is the right thing to do, 1 call is FINE. Be cordial and professional and you are golden.)
