Just wondering
So, I have just been wondering what effect competing at an elite level in an individual, and certainly not famous, sport has on getting a job in IB.
I had never really considered sport affecting a career in finance before, but I have read some posts on here that suggest differently.
How much would it help possible employees were to learn that I have so far won two junior world championship titles, one under 21 world title and got fourth in the Open World Championships?
Once again I must reiterate that my sport, though popular socially, is not on many tv stations and it is extremely unlikely that anybody not involved in the sport themselves would have heard of me.
1 SB for the first person to guess the sport.
My guess is billiards. Popular socially yet rarely televised.
Ping pong.
I believe it's called "table tennis" in the pro league. Since you stole my guess, I'm going with darts.
Squash.
I guess fencing, probably foil.
Although they do all sound pretty cool (especially fencing, chicks did swords), it is something just a little different. I will give a hint that it is most definitely a water sport. Keep guessing!
Water Polo
It's an individual sport. And a motor is involved
I think that this all demonstrates just how unknown it is...
I am also a master of an individual sport. SB to whoever guesses it.
synchronized swimming or diving
Wakeboarding?
I think it would be very helpful. Hits it on a number of levels, shows you have a winning attitude, commitment, life outside of finance, etc., etc...
Bass fishing. It's on ESPN/2, so I'll classify it as a sport.
As for whether it helps, it will depend on the interviewer. I'm sure some will see is as just a regular activity that you're good at. Others will place a heavier weight on it and really dig the dedication, physicality (maybe), and competitiveness that it gives you. It's totally a crapshoot on how much it'll help you, but adding it as the 'interests' section part of your resume certainly won't hurt.
impossible to answer how much it will help, but I don't see how it would hurt unless it's something that's considered very odd (e.g., if you were a male cheerleader)
Thanks guys. So you seem to be saying that it definitely won't hurt to mention it, and could do me some good. That's all I really needed to know, I wasn't quite expecting a magical ticket into a job.
It sounds interesting and unique (and not in a weird way). I would mention it.
