meet the team?
interviewing for a very small/local niche PE firm (around $100M AUM) for the summer as undergrad. had a great information call through a cold email with a partner and he has now invited me to come into the office to “meet the team” I am going to prepare but how much interview prep on technicals do you think is necessary and what would this really look like for those in the industry? I am just unsure on how this works and do not want to be caught off guard or look at as too casual in my preparation. thanks in advance to any help or insights.
First of all, it depends. I would recommend over preparing. I would focus on several areas. First, be prepared to discuss the firm's current portfolio (pick two active investments you find interesting and learn as much about them as you can and then have a general familiarity with what the other businesses do), recent acquisitions over the past twelve months, and recent acquisitions over the last twelve months. This shows a genuine interest in and familiarity with the firm's activity. Be sure to understand the firm's investing strategy (e.g., size, sector, thesis) as much as can be gleaned from available materials. Thirdly, be prepared with great questions. These questions should be genuinely helpful in your evaluation of the firm as a place you want to spend the next several years; don't just make up questions to fill space... consider what you need to make this important personal decision. Finally, I would be prepared to answer technical questions. They may range from verbally explaining how you would value a specific case study like how you would construct the income statement, leverage ranges, growth rates and entry/exit multiples (somewhat possible) to sitting in front of a computer for a hour to complete a rough LBO (less likely but possible). Again... it depends
